#F5AE1FSOFT EDGES
2025
At the edge of Seoul, rapid gentrification has replaced rice fields with monotonous blocks, resulting in dull apartments that isolate rather than connect. These new developments erase our history, alienating older generations and disconnects newcomers from the past.
Soft Edges is a project that blends traditional values with contemporary living. Through intergenerational exchange, our workshops invite elders and children to collaboratively reimagine apartment facades. Elders share folk cultural knowledge, while children contribute fresh perspectives envisioning an exciting future.
Channeling their voices into exterior retrofits, we soften hard building edges—introducing terraces that buffer space between the street and interior. Community drawings and patterns are woven into building textures, transforming sterile surfaces with tactility, color, and emotion. This process fosters a distinct identity for each building, setting them apart from uniform developments.
Ultimately, we aim to revitalize tradition in ways that shape a more human and emotionally resonant future.
